Tax Controversies and Corporate & Individual Tax Structuring

Our tax practice is dedicated to solving complex transactional and financial problems for a diverse group of clients, including major multinational corporations, private equity and hedge funds, individuals and tax-exempt investors. Each of our tax attorneys hold either a masters degree in taxation and/or are certified public accountants. We provide sophisticated tax planning for businesses, families and individuals across a range of transactions and situations, creatively seeking and implementing solutions that preserve wealth and capital while complying with the intricately complex state and federal tax law.

The Firm’s goal is to provide tax advice that fits and promotes the business objectives of the client. To do so, we work closely with outside accountants and tap our transactional expertise to design structures that can be implemented practically in the context of the particular deal. Our tax lawyers are well respected in the community, facilitating the negotiation of documents and the resolution of disputes. Our tax partners have chaired bar association committees, have taught in academic settings and remain active in bar association and professional activities.

Our tax practice encompasses advice and advocacy concerning every area of state and federal tax law, including income tax, employment tax, sales and use tax, property tax, and taxation related to estates and trusts, gifts, retirement plans and deferred compensation arrangements. We provide tax planning services for individuals and businesses, counseling clients on the most tax efficient means to structure their affairs and their transactions. We regularly represent both corporations and individuals in proceedings before the Internal Revenue Service, the North Carolina Department of Revenue, the federal district courts and the United States Tax Court. We assist clients in disputes involving civil and criminal tax matters at all stages of the dispute. Further, we assist individuals and corporations who are undergoing tax audits, who are contesting unjustified tax assessments, and who seek rulings concerning the tax consequences of a business transaction. We also represent clients facing tax collection efforts by assisting with the negotiation of an offer in compromise or an installment payment plan plus assisting in the defense against an attempt to place a lien, garnishment or levy on property. Our firm is a full service tax practice that not only defends our clients once they are involved in a tax controversy but also advises clients on planning future transactions to minimize tax disputes.
